Vias institute is participating on a project in Cameroon aimed at setting up a fully fledged accident database and training the parties involved to use a system of this kind to promote the organisation of targeted road safety campaigns.
Accident statistics and other data form an important base for arriving at efficient, targeted programmes for improving road safety. Cameroon already had just such an inventory, but the various official bodies did not report in the same way and often not in full. So in the first stage it was important to get all of these organisations (hospitals, road police, general police, etc.) round the table to put a clear set of arrangements in place. The system had to be made more efficient. The next stage involved training the people who were going to use this database to plan targeted campaigns. Vias institute provided its own input and organised a two-day training course in Cameroon, both for officials and for staff from various organisations and educational establishments.
