This lab conducts research on alcolocks, breathalysers and analysis devices.

Approved and calibrated measuring devices

Alcohol locks, breath-tests and analysis devices are used for criminal prosecutions. This means that the findings produced by these devices can result in very serious penalties. Which is why it is essential that the public can be certain that these devices have been approved and calibrated in line with technical regulations.

Authorised and ISO-accredited lab

Vias institute’s universal Alcohol Measuring laboratory is ISO17025-certified, accreditation number (110 Test) accredited by the Belgian Accreditation institution, BELAC. FPS Economy first accredited the lab in 1991 at the time the first Royal Decree on breath analysis was published. The laboratory is equipped with two universal wet gas simulators that are not related to specific manufacturers. The testing unit has been expanded and compares with the German benchmark standard (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt – PTB).

Model approvals

Vias institute is accredited, accreditation number (110 Test), to carry out the preliminary tests for the model approval of devices to analyse breath, breath-test devices and alcohol locks, in line with Belgian legislation. Chemical alcohol testers for use once-only can be tested under accreditation in accordance with French standards (NF X20-702). During the approval procedure, we keep you notified of the results so that any problems can be resolved quickly. You are also given access to the Vias institute server so that you can monitor how the tests are going on a daily basis.

Legal calibration of police alcohol measuring equipment: a totally customised service

Vias institute is an independent institute, accreditation number (110 Test) that is accredited for the model approval, calibration and technical inspection of breath analysis devices and alcohol locks, in compliance with Belgian law. Once the verification process is complete, we produce the necessary legal documents displaying the Vias institute logo. As an additional free service, you will also receive the full test report, complete with all of the measurement results and findings.

We also handle the logistical side of the equipment. When the devices reach the end of their validity period, we will come and collect them from you, overhaul and check them over and then deliver them back to you in line with your specific requirements.

Testing commercial alcohol testers

Manufacturers, government authorities, companies and consumer organisations are able to ask for tests to be carried out on alcohol testers. In our tests, we gauge the extent to which the devices actually meet the manufacturer’s specifications. The procedure for the test is decided on by mutual consultation. We use the results to draw up a detailed test report containing all of the measurement results and findings.
