Psychological fitness-to-drive assessment

During the psychological examination a psychologist evaluates the extent to which your attitudes, choices and behaviour in traffic align with safe and responsible driving.

The assessment consists of three parts:

1.    Interview with the psychologist. During this interview, the psychologist will ask questions about:

  • Your offence(s) and the circumstances in which it/they occurred
  • Your qualifications and work situation
  • Your family situation and social and personal life
  • Your consumption of alcohol, drugs or medication
  • Your mental state

2.    Completing questionnaires. These questionnaires provide insight into your intake of alcohol, drugs and medication, as well as the personality traits that influence your ability to drive safely.

3.    Computerised tests. We use a computer test to assess skills required to drive in traffic:

  • Reaction speed
  • Alertness and vigilance
  • The speed and accuracy with which you perceive traffic elements

No prior computer experience is required to complete these tests.

Medical fitness-to-drive assessment

The medical fitness-to-drive assessment evaluates your medical suitability to operate a motor vehicle. It is carried out by a doctor working for an accredited institution. Through an interview and a medical examination, the doctor assesses whether your physical and mental state of health meets the minimum medical standards as described in Annex 6 of the Royal Decree of 23 March 1998

The physician may request additional medical information if necessary and will take a final decision once all medical elements are available.
