Briefing

Commuting accidents are occupational accidents that occur on public roads during the journey between home and the workplace. Of all occupational accidents recorded in 2023 by the Federal Agency for Occupational Risks (Fedris), 12% occurred in traffic. The majority of these accidents took place during commuting journeys.

Commuting accidents represent a significant risk and – like other road traffic crashes – entail substantial societal costs and human suffering. In 2023, 2,170 people were injured and 30 workers were killed in commuting accidents.

This briefing updates previous analyses and presents the most recent figures on commuting accidents in Belgium. It combines data from the Fedris database and official road crash statistics to provide as complete a picture as possible of these accidents, their trends and their impact.
